29th Annual Meeting of the Southern Association for the History of Medicine and Science, in partnership with The University of Pittsburgh Institute of Bioethics & the C.F. Reynolds Medical History Society, Pittsburgh, PA, March 4-6, 2027

SAHMS invites submissions for papers in the history of science, medicine, and nursing for the 29th annual meeting of the SAHMS, to be held at the University of Pittsburgh March 4-6, 2027. We welcome submissions from students (including undergraduate, graduate, nursing, medical, and health sciences professional students), professors, research and professional scientists, health care professionals, and independent/retired scholars with an academic interest in the history of science, medicine, nursing, and related topics. Despite the “Southern” component of SAHMS’s organizational name, papers need not pertain to topics of specifically Southern regional interest; we welcome papers on topics related to any area of scientific or medical history, regardless of region or time period.  

Participants may propose individual papers or panels of several papers on a theme. If you are proposing a panel, please provide the title and theme of the panel, and a list of 3 or 4 authors and paper titles related to that topic. Each author will need to individually submit their own proposal for their papers within the panel. 

Speakers should expect to give a presentation of no more than 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion. All submissions should represent original scholarship not already published or in press. We will not accept more than one paper from a given primary author for presentation. 

Submissions must include an abstract (of up to 300 words) with title, your name, and your institutional affiliation. Abstracts are due by October 30, 2026 via this submission form. 

All participants and attendees are responsible for their own travel expenses and must pay conference registration costs/meeting fees.
